MILLEN, GA
The city of Millen, GA, serves as the seat of rural Jenkins County, sitting on the east side of the Ogeechee River. Millen is home to an estimated population of around 3,000 people, covering 3.5 square miles of land.
Settled in 1835 and incorporated nearly a half-century later in 1881, Millen relied largely on cotton farming in the early years. It was named for McPherson B. Millen, the superintendent of the Central of Georgia Railway. Most of Millen was destroyed during the Civil War and rebuilt thereafter. Today, Millen maintains several key pieces of its history. The Downtown Millen Historic District joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and surroundings remain largely agricultural.
