The city of Sylvania, GA, serves as the seat of Screven County, located in the far eastern-central part of the state. Sylvania is a relatively small city, home to a population of about 2,600 people across 3.8 square miles of land.
The original European-American town of Sylvania was founded in 1790 by settlers who migrated to the region after the Revolutionary War. The name comes from the Latin term meaning “place in the woods.” Today, Sylvania goes by the nickname “The Welcome Station City,” while also operating under the motto “The Azalea and Dogwood City.” The most common plants and trees around Sylvania include pine, oak and most notably, dogwood, hence the slogan. Sylvania is known for its annual livestock festival, held every April.
